All over the world, bananas are celebrated for the nutritional value they provide us.

Usually, we’ll eat them to benefit from their electrolytes, high fibre index and high potassium content.

But these powerful yellow fruits are beginning to take centre stage in the skin and hair care world, too – and with good reason.

Why bananas?

Bananas are the edible fruit – technically a variant of the berry – that grows on banana plants. Native to Southeast Asia, banana plants can now be found in a variety of different warm climates around the world. Amazingly, there are over 70 different species of banana plant, though only some produce fruit that can be eaten.

Bananas contain lots of important nutrients such as antioxidants, potassium, protein and Vitamins B6 and C. They’re also rich in pectin, a type of fibre that gives the flesh of a ripe banana its spongy form. Pectin may help to moderate blood sugar levels after a meal and it’s often thought to reduce your appetite by keeping your stomach full for longer.

Bananas are also considered to improve heart health – specifically by aiding in blood sugar control – thanks to their high levels of potassium and magnesium. And these yellow heroes are great for helping you reach your fitness goals, too. They’re regularly eaten by athletes to help reduce muscle cramps caused by exercise, and bananas also serve as an excellent fuel for endurance practices.

The benefits of bananas for hair

Beyond the traditional benefits of the humble banana, here are some lesser-known ways they can also help boost the health of your hair, as well.

Enhance hair appearance

Bananas are rich in folic acid, which can help your hair look shiny, smooth and well- nourished. The potassium in the fruit and the other natural oils derived from bananas may also improve your hair’s look and feel.

Soothe dry, damaged hair

Dry hair cells can become brittle and break, due to a lack of hydration within each follicle. Bananas contain nourishing properties and can help with dry strands prone to breakage.
